1. ABOUT US

The Wüste Welle is an independent media platform in the Tübingen, Reutlingen and Rottenburg region. Unlike private radio stations, we are non-profit. The Wüste Welle does not adhere to audience ratings and is the only advertising-free radio station that broadcasts (almost) 24 hours a day in the region.

The editorial work at Wüste Welle is not paid but instead carried out by passionate editors on a voluntary basis. More than 120 broadcasters create our radio programing in their spare time. Our goal is to give socially marginalized (marginalised) groups and perspectives access to the airwaves.

FREE RADIO = NON-PROFIT ASSOCIATION

Officially, Wüste Welle is a non-profit, registered association as a “free radio station.”

We receive our frequency allocation as well as our basic funding from the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg (LfK). This is financed from a (very small) part of the broadcasting fees.

However, the basic funding is far from sufficient to operate a radio station with training and project operations.

ONLY OUR MEMBERS SECURE OUR POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE

Funds from the LfK and from projects are always tied to conditions. Your membership fees and donations ensure our free and diverse radio programs.

Open broadcasting slots

Doing your own program is still too much for you, but you would still like to broadcast on free radio? That's exactly why we have set up open broadcasting slots. Here you can present what is close to your heart to the region of Tübingen, Reutlingen and Rottenburg 'live on the air.’

We will accompany you during the preparation and live on the air as well.

Have we sparked your interest in an Open Broadcasting (groß schreiben?) slot?  Call us and make an appointment:  Mon-Fri from 1pm-4pm on 07071-760337 or by email: buero@wueste-welle.de

HowTo - 5 steps to an open broadcasting slot

The path to your own show

We are always happy to welcome new programmers and programs. You are free to decide which formats and which topics you want to broadcast, and, of course, you can also choose your own musical selection.

Find out how you can get your own show on (the) Wüste Welle here:

Step 1: Introductory workshop

Approximately every three months, we organize (organise) an introductory workshop for prospective radio producers and interested people. The introductory workshops are led by experienced broadcasters and provide basic knowledge about interviewing techniques, the use of mobile reporting equipment, the operation of the broadcast studio and the digital editing suite and, of course, preparation for speaking on the air.

Here you can find out about the current workshop dates. You can also register for courses online.

Step 2: Become a member

In order to be authorized (authorised) for broadcasting on Free Radio, you must be a member of the Friends of Free Radio. Membership costs 96 euros per year for broadcasters, or a reduced rate of 84 euros (for those 18 and up) or 48 euros (for those under 18).

Step 3: Receive "broadcasting licence"

Once you have completed the workshop and paid for your first year's membership, you will receive your broadcasting license and can then design and apply for your program.

Step 4: Apply for broadcasting slot

Twice a year, you can apply for new programs. To do this, you need to come to the editorial plenum and present your program concept. You can find out the dates for the editorial plenum in the office and directly at the workshops.

If the editorial board approves your broadcasting concept by a majority, you will get your own broadcasting slot at the next change of the schedule.

Step 5: Broadacast

You are ON THE AIR at (the) Wüste Welle 96.6 MHz! Now you "only" have to broadcast your show - and if you still have problems in the beginning, you will certainly find someone who can help you.

3. TRAINING

We teach you everything you need to know about radio! We have special offers for children and young people, girls*, older people and people with disabilities as well as multilingual projects. You can get a taste of radio programming in our seminars, workshops and special programs, such as the "Summer Holiday Radio.”

Anyone who wants to enrich the Wüste Welle’s programming with their own program must first take part in one of the Wüste Welle introductory workshops. No previous knowledge is required for participation.

In addition, we offer a wide range of different workshops and seminars every year, e.g., DJing, moderation, voice techniques and media law.

Introductory courses

We offer our workshops for beginners as a modular system. Therefore, all interested people have the option to take the courses in individual modules or as a complete course. All modules are necessary to obtain the broadcasting license for the Wüste Welle.

Introductory workshop

The introductory workshop focuses on creativity and the fun of active radio work. In the four subsequent workshop modules, the basic knowledge acquired in the introductory workshop on specific topics is deepened and expanded. Even long-time radio producers can refresh their knowledge here.
