The lesser the blah blah, the more the music. Going by such simple guidelines of life, the Newcomer News show goes on, at our freies radio station for Reutlingen & Tübingen, and from here, to the whole world. Uploaded with an article, which is this one we are reading now, sometimes when there is less enough of chatter, the whole two hours is actually quite a music filled journey. Droplets of information appeared in the form of 'Sugarman'. One of the best music documentaries you may watch, way before the genre of documentary film making on old superstars became a trend, this documentary is for real. Tthe life of a superstar, but a superstar like the one who sang the song, 'Sixto Rodrigues', can have been imagined by the potential of the human creative mind no doubt, but this also actually happened. Its called, 'Searching for the Sugarman'.
Then again, deep in the forests of Kodaicanal, a jam session gets recorded and aired on the show with a range of moods lets say. But sooner than soon, the urge got the better of the show with music purely from the electronic era. The genres under this can be many but for most of us, the main ones can predominantly be (in the order of lower bpms to higher) ambient and chill out, break beats, dub step, techno, drum n bass and then psy trance that goes beyond with this very concept of bpms that we started off with somewhere in this sentence. But this is also like the story of Goa Trance, which was what the music was called, at the outset. This then inverted and landed somewhere among the several sub sub genres in the present times, now broadly genre-d as Psychadelic Trance Music.
The world of electronic music, also called Goa, in many spaces in the European context, being one of the sub genres of electronic music, has more to do with layers of sounds quite possible by the computer device and softwares galore. Experiencing one such act, called Gidra, Thomas Aquino Lobo, from the lovely village of Parra in Goa was another on the line up next. A music producer also working with Parvati records who celebrated their 25 years of existence this year in Germany, the man keeps returning every now and then with some newer tunes with sounds. The Parvati Gathering however, was followed by few more gatherings, one of them called Gaggalakka, from where we looped out the dj set of the headliner act called, Psykia. More than an hour and a half long, although we couldn't play the whole set, we did get a taste of how this artist kept whoever listenning involved with .. 'a plethora of sounds' as commercial music magazines may quote quite often. But really, to be able to sink into a dj set like this with layers of sounds to catch your journey of conscious dimensions, has been well known not only to be a pleasure simply, but this also has some written academics about this type of trance state, or liminial state, as ethnologies defines this. So journeying further into the sounds of psychedelia creating a sphere of sound or a story as is commonly known with djs playing at Goa music events or rather psychadelic trance gatherings.
The world of psycore, however, is an output from the metal and darker genres of rock music so to speak, since this started with rock. The new generation seems to have attraction for such sounds in more psychadelic formats or formats of beat music, and here is where the bpm goes above 200 beats per minute (bpm). Called Psycore, such is the manifestation of metal music with the trance music genre, that somehow has something for everyone - from light bouncy stuff, to darker deeper matter. The recent thing that is catching with djs, is Psy Tech. Well, things come to place slowly than others so if you are in a place where this has already a following or something, so be it. Clubs often adapt to different genres of electronic music to sell themselves. And of late, Goa parties seem to have resurected from the curse of the police, who had somehow labelled these parties as drug parties which is clearly a myth if statistically checked. Not only statistically, but according to Phatmatix, a French music producer's interview (with yours truly for the Hill Top Festival) he swears by the fact that more than three times and varieties of drug intake take place at film festivals like Cannes, or huge techno events - than psy trance or Goa Parties. Goa, instead, opened a way to party without drugs, only psychadelics, which have no fatal overdose potential or any form of possibility of addiction. Goa gatherings worldwide getting painted black in this stereotype of 'drug party' was simply unfair, especialy since it was actually quite the opposite- a way of freedom from drug abuse from times from the past. Of course, from all the students in our class, some were more mischievious than others, and hence the world manifested so. This was what Goa parties taught us, mentions Firas, also called Firasdelic. Having played around the block, his taste is more on the lighter bouncy psychadelic side of trance music, far on the other end of dark psy trance, if one were to imagine the division in sub sub genres of psy trance. Understandably, this light dark notion came from the time of the day, from a time when time never mattered for a party to start or end. More so because, when one party was to end, the other one was set up to begin. Going further to understanding Goa as a place, this is how we hope things continue. Naturally, there are more energies fueling this Goa parties trend to continue, as they develop on their own, just like Goa was created by itself.
There will be more from 'Goa' soon with a show starting at Wueste Welle this November 9, called, 'From Goa with love' to add to what we know about this concept, or state of mind, how some have called it. The set from Firasdelic starts at the outset of the last half an hour. Considering he recently played with the likes of Ajja (popular psy trance act mentioned specifically for music research) and is creating some interesting dancing spaces, his contribution, like many since the late seventies, early eighties, when this genre was first played is also something. Citing the landmark of psy trance being the genre of electronic music to take on bpms from 100 to 200 to infinity by now, starting from the 2000s onward, Goa has indeed come a long way and is most likely a party type of a kind, thats here to stay. Then again, if bpms went so high, how is it for the dancers on the trance dance floor, with a whole new meaning to beat senses and dancing to a beat. Hoping many smile at this, stay tuned to Wueste Welle to hear more from Firas, who sometimes comes by and plays at this small bar near the Rathaus called Chez Michelle. But yes, stay tuned ..
